Dr. Khouri is the most senior and the most experienced hand surgeon in South Florida. He trained in hand surgery at Harvard, and since 1989, has personally performed over 50 000 operations on the hand. Along the way, he authored 150 scientific medical publications in the most prestigious peer reviewed medical journals and gave over 1000 presentations and lectures at various National and International surgery courses and meetings. Dr. Khouri is a true scholar; he served as Associate Editor of Plastic & Hand Surgery Journals and is an active member of many distinguished Medical & Surgical Societies. He is a founding member of the Society for Peripheral Nerve Surgery and the World Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery. He is World renowned and recognized by his peers as a great surgeon, teacher, innovator and contributor to advances in Hand Surgery and Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Khouri trained in General Surgery at UNC, in Plastic Surgery at Brown University, in Reconstructive Microsurgery at NYU and in Hand Surgery at Harvard. Prior to moving to Miami and helping establish the Miami Hand Center in 1996, he was professor of Plastic Surgery and in charge of the Hand Surgery Fellowship Training Program at Washington University / Barnes, Jewish Hospital. He has since taught as Visiting Professor in more than 50 Universities across the World.
Working as a hand surgeon over the past 30 years, Dr. Khouri has treated thousands of patients with hand and upper extremity conditions and diseases from the most common to the most complex. He is still very active, caring for patients everyday and helping them with any hand problem or emergency they might have.
Dr. Daniel Calva-Cerqueira, MD, FACS

Dr. Calva-Cerqueira completed his training at the prestigious Johns Hopkins/University of Maryland Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery program. News and World Reports ranked Johns Hopkins as the #1 hospital in the US for the past 23 years. Dr. Calva was there at John Hopkins Hospital when they performed their first ever hand transplantation. He is double boarded by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Calva-Cerqueira also trained at the Curtis National Hand Center, one of the most prestigious hand centers in the world. The Curtis National Hand Center has one of the most coveted and competitive fellowships in hand surgery, training future leaders in the specialty of hand and upper extremity surgery. While at the Curtis National Hand Center, Dr. Calva-Cerqueira trained in a wide variety of hand problems, and traumatic injuries. From finger tip injuries, to amputations, tendon ruptures, finger fractures, distal radius fractures, forearm fractures, repetitive motion injuries, complications from arthritis, nerve injuries, and congenital anomalies.
Dr. Calva-Cerqueira served as the first Administrative Chief Resident in the department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and he is the first recipient, within the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, to receive The Frank I. Coulson Jr. Award for Clinical and Academic Excellence at Johns Hopkins. This is the most prestigious award at Johns Hopkins, and a very selective process by his peers is used to select the individual.
Dr. Daniel Calva-Cerquiera joined the Miami Hand Center in 2014 and has operated extensively with Dr. Khouri. He is a technically gifted surgeon who rapidly espoused the patient treatment protocols of the Miami Hand Center.
Dr. Raul Cortes MD, FACS

Dr. Raul Cortes is triple certified in Hand Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and General Surgery. He is double boarded by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery and holds an additional Certificate in the Subspecialty of Surgery of the Hand. He is an active Fellow within the American College of Surgeons as well as a member of the American Society of Surgery of the Hand, American Association of Hand Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons.
He is a graduate of numerous prestigious training programs including the Harvard Plastic Surgery Program, UCLA Hand and Microsurgery program and the University of Michigan Hospital General Surgery program. He is a Clinical Instructor in Surgery at Weil Cornell Medical College, Assistant Clinical Professor at the Mt. Sinai Icahn School of Medicine and holds affiliations in New York, New Jersey and Florida.
After graduating with Distinction from Duke University, he attended Emory University School of Medicine where he graduated with Cum Laude honors. Dr. Cortes then received his surgical training over 13 years including two residencies, two fellowships and with experiences across four continents. During this training he was awarded numerous teaching honors including those from the medical students at Harvard Medical School as well Plastic Surgery residents at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Cortes is dedicated to all aspects of Hand and Wrist Surgery. He treats conditions of the hand and wrist using arthroscopic and other minimally invasive techniques. In addition, he has been dedicated to contributing to the field of Hand Surgery as a consultant reviewer for the Journal of Hand Surgery.
Dr. Susana Leal-Khouri, MD, FAAD

Dr. Susana Leal-Khouri is triple Board Certified in Dermatology, Pathology, and Dermatopathology. She trained in Surgery at Tufts University affiliated hospitals, in Pathology at Harvard University and in Dermatology at Washington University and Barnes Hospital. She has a fellowship in Moh’s Micrographic and Cutaneous Surgery from Washington University. She was the first woman in Florida trained and certified in Mohs Surgery making, her the most experienced female skin cancer surgeon in the Miami area.
She is an Associate Member of the College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and she is a Voluntary Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Miami. She has written two Dermatology textbooks and has authored a number of scientific papers.
Dr. Susana Leal-Khouri has been in practice for over 25 years. She is an experienced dermatologist who has treated and cared for thousands of patients. She is considered an expert in cosmetic dermatology, pediatric dermatology and dermatologic surgery.
Dr. Mae Gutierrez, MD, FAAFP

Dr. Mae Gutierrez-Cuenca was born in the city of Santa Clara, located in the central part of Cuba. She lived there for six years and then moved to Havana, where she lived the rest of her years before coming to the USA. She attended medical school there, obtained her Medical Doctor Diploma in 1991 with high academic honors, completed an ObGyn residency, and practiced as an attending physician for five years. Upon her arrival to the USA in 1999, she started working in the “Dermatology and Plastic Surgery” practice as a Medical Assistant while taking the required examinations to validate her Medical Diploma in this country.
She was then fortunate train in the Family Medicine Program at Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital in the city of Chicago. She completed their residency program with high academic standings in 2007. Upon her return to South Florida, she joined Dr. Susana Leal-Khouri’s practice, this time as a fully accredited, Board Certified Medical Doctor. During the past few years she has been part of a dynamic growth of the “Dermatology and Plastic Surgery” team and patients. She is very happy to have come back to serve this great community. She looks forward to practicing medicine while giving her very best with passion and professionalism.
Eduardo Gonzalez-Hernandez MD

Dr. Eduardo Gonzalez-Hernandez is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and has additional certification in Hand Surgery. He received his Medical Doctorate at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Thereafter, he completed his orthopedic residency program at Case Western Reserve University. He has additional training in Hand and Orthopaedic surgery in Switzerland, and Spain where he trained and lectured extensively. His interests in the field of nerve reconstruction and microsurgery led him to additional studies and training with the renowned team at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. In addition, in the pursuit of excellence and the best set of skills, He graduated from the Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland.
Dr. Gonzalez-Hernandez is a frequent speaker at conferences around the globe addressing difficult problems in surgery of flexor tendons and fractures about the shoulder and elbow. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and an active member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has been a board member of the American Fracture Association, as has presided as President of the Federation of Hand societies/ La Federación de Sociedades de Cirugía de Mano.
